Hebrews chapter eight verses six and seven tell us that "but now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second." Through the establishment of Christ's new covenant came forgiveness of our sins and greater access to the Father. Just as Christ established a new covenant, He sometimes leads our lives in new directions so that His purposes may be fulfilled and more people will hear about His love.
Such is the case with the formation of Tony McGee & New Covenant. Many will remember Tony as the distinctive vocal behind many of the Redeemed's greatest hits. Tony sang with the Rogersville, Tennessee-based Redeemed for 11 years. During those years, he was featured on songs such as “Calvary's the Reason Why,” "Just On The Other Side," “It Will Pass,” and “Listen, Sinner, Listen.” During his days with the Redeemed, Tony developed a very unique country-flavored sound that no one else can mimic. Perhaps it is Tony's anointing that sets him apart. He allows the Holy Spirit to season every note, increasing his talent by leaps and bounds.
Tony McGee
Prior to joining the Redeemed, Tony sang with his family, the Singing McGees. Tony began singing at age five and sang on his first album at age seven. Little did Tony know that his experience with his family and his career with the Redeemed was preparing him for greater opportunities. While he enjoys more time at home with his wife Melissa and his darling daughter Bethany, Tony has joined forces with Shane Ferrell and Karen McPherson in the development of one of the greatest trios to burst onto the Southern Gospel scenes.
Shane Ferrell
Shane is a brother-in-law to Tony (Melissa's brother) and has enjoyed a very successful "behind-the-scenes" career in Southern Gospel music. Shane has been involved in radio since the age of 14. In fact, he won the Singing News DJ of the Year award in 1996 and 1997. Several years ago Shane founded and has managed Lighthouse Promotions, where he has promoted many chart-topping songs for artists such as the Crabb Family, Mike Bowling, the Whisnants, the Perrys, the Primitive, Janet Paschal, Kyla Rowland and many others. It was not until he was asked to fill in for a few various artists in the past few years, that Shane realized the calling on his life to sing. Shane and his wife Diana are bringing up two beautiful children, Zachary and Karis in the world of Southern Gospel music.
Karen McPherson
The dynamic voice that completes the sound of this talented trio belongs to a lady by the name of Karen McPherson. Karen has been singing for her entire life. She began singing at age three and has sung with her mother, Sue and a dear friend, Linda Greene for more than 20 years. She also sang with Higher Calling for four years. When the group disbanded in 1998, Karen decided to spend some time at home with her family and in her home church. During that time, the Lord has strengthened her voice and her anointing even more than before. Karen felt the Lord leading her back onto the road just in time to combine her talents with Shane and Tony.
Tony McGee & New Covenant released their debut project, Somebody Prayed, in the summer of 2004. The first single, “On The Third Day,” was an instant radio favorite. This became the group’s first Singing News Top 80 Song, peaking at #44. Since then, the group has scored four top 40 songs (“I Have No Doubt,” “Out Of Harm’s Way,” “Joy,” and “He Knows“). With the success of their radio singles, New Covenant was also among the Top 5 Nominees for Horizon Group Of The Year by the Singing News Magazine.
With voices that blend beyond compare, passions that have one common goal, and divine leading from above, not to mention the promotional, managerial, and people skills, New Covenant is sure to be a new establishment that follows the example of Christ's establishment. With Tony McGee & New Covenant in the plans, Southern Gospel will never be the same!
